Edinburgh school catchment map

Type a postcode or full Edinburgh address to find the primary and secondary catchments for that property. The map shows the City of Edinburgh Council's official boundary polygons — toggle between non-denominational and Roman Catholic layers, click any catchment to view live rentals inside it, and use the regional list below the map to browse by area. Always confirm any address near a catchment boundary with the council before signing a lease.

Toggle non-denominational and Roman Catholic layers from the panel in the top-right. Click any polygon for the school name and a link to live rentals.

Common questions about the catchment map

Why does the map show two catchments for my address?

Every Edinburgh address sits inside both a non-denominational and a Roman Catholic catchment for primary, and the same for secondary — four catchments in total per address. The map shows both layers because admission depends on the school sector you're applying to. Children baptised in the Roman Catholic faith have priority for the RC catchment school; everyone else applies to the non-denominational catchment school.

How accurate is the address search?

The search uses OpenStreetMap geocoding to convert your address to coordinates, then looks those up against the City of Edinburgh Council's official catchment polygons. Postcode-only inputs return the postcode centroid, which is fine for properties in the middle of a postcode area but unreliable near catchment boundaries. For any address near a boundary, type the full street address and confirm with the council before relying on the result.

Why does the map sometimes show a different school than my nearest one?

Catchments are drawn on a map by the council, not by walking distance. Two flats on the same street can fall in different catchments, and your nearest school is often not the one your address is in catchment for. The map answers "which catchment is this address in," not "which is the closest school" — they are separate questions.

Is this the official council catchment map?

No — this is the City of Edinburgh Council's polygon data rendered on our map for renter convenience. The official map lives at edinburgh.gov.uk/catchmentmap and is the authoritative source. We refresh our copy when the council publishes updates, but for any address near a boundary always confirm with the council before signing a lease.
